How We Research and Recommend Gear

The short version

We are a research desk, not a testing lab. We do not buy and personally test every product we write about. What we do instead is read the things most parents don't have time to read: the manufacturer's specification sheet, the published safety standard the product is certified against, the airline and FAA rules that decide whether it can go on a plane, and the accumulated experience of hundreds or thousands of verified buyers.

We think that is genuinely more useful than one family's experience with one unit. A single reviewer flying eight times with a stroller tells you how it behaved for them. Four hundred verified buyers tell you which failures are common, which are flukes, and how often the thing breaks in year two.

What goes into a recommendation

1. Specifications, from the manufacturer. Weight, folded dimensions, age and weight limits, materials, what is in the box. We record these as published and note when a manufacturer is vague.
2. Safety standards and regulations. Where a product category is governed — car seats, sleep surfaces, carriers — we cite the actual standard or agency guidance rather than paraphrasing it. You will see links to the AAP, CPSC, NHTSA, FAA and ASTM throughout the site.
3. Verified buyer reviews, read in bulk. We look for patterns rather than anecdotes: the complaint that recurs across dozens of reviews, the failure that shows up at the six-month mark, the sizing problem that only affects one car model.
4. Price and availability, checked against the live listing.Prices on this site are synced from Amazon's API rather than typed by hand. They still drift — always confirm on the retailer's page before buying.

What we don't do

• We don't claim to have personally used every product. Where a review describes how something behaves, that description is drawn from the sources above, not from a first-hand trip.
• We don't publish numeric star ratings. A rating implies a scoring rubric applied consistently across products we have handled. We would rather tell you who a product is right for and who should skip it.
• We don't accept payment for placement, and no manufacturer reviews our copy before publication.
• We don't recommend a product we would not suggest to a friend in the same situation. Products that fail on safety or reliability are left out, and we say when a cheaper option is the better buy.

Where our limits are

Because we are working from documentation and aggregated buyer experience, there are things we genuinely cannot tell you: how a fabric feels, whether a fold mechanism gets stiff after a year, how loud a particular sound machine actually is in a hotel room. When a question turns on that kind of tactile judgement, we say so rather than inventing an answer.

Car seat installation is the clearest example. We can tell you what a seat's manual and the federal standard require. We cannot inspect your vehicle. For installation specifics, find a certified Child Passenger Safety Technician — many fire departments and hospitals offer free checks.

How we handle mistakes

If we get something wrong, tell us and we will correct it and note the correction on the page. Products are also delisted, discontinued and repriced constantly; when a product we recommended is no longer available, we replace the recommendation rather than leaving a dead link.
